This is what I do best—helping couples craft ceremonies that have everyone laughing, crying, and saying, 'Wow, that was SO them!'
Let me show you how with 24 fun, modern, and creative ideas that will take your ceremony from fine to phenomenal.
Grab a cuppa (or a cocktail 🍹) and dive in! Once you’ve had a read and picked your faves, let’s chat and start planning a wedding ceremony that will turn those ideas into reality. 💜
1. Unity Cocktail Ceremony
This entails each of you having a glass of your favourite cocktail, whether that be based on a meaningful memory, a personal characteristic it represents or simply based on your favourite drink! You each take a sip from your cocktail, then we mix a bit of each into a new cocktail glass to represent and symbolise your union! Depending on your level of daring nature, you may or may not opt to then drink from the new cocktail! This is a fun and modern twist on a unity candle ritual.
2. Secret Love Letters
Write letters to each other before the ceremony and seal them in a box to be read on your first anniversary. We can create a special moment and even perhaps read the first line to create a dramatic cliff hanger like moment for fun and intrigue!
3. Ring Warming Ceremony
Most ceremonies nowadays include a ring exchange, which usually entails acouple each taking the rings from the Best Man or alternative ringbearer, placing them on each others’ fingers with some words of promise. What we could do to add a layer of inclusivity and make it even more memorable for your guests, is to pass the wedding rings around your guests during the ceremony, so they can 'warm' them with good wishes before you exchange them. This is a really lovely way of asking your guests to play an active role in a big part of the ceremony. Just be sure to put the rings inside a secure pouch to ensure they can’t fall on the floor!
4. Include a Surprise Song
For all you love birds who like to sing and for who music is an important part of your life, you could secretly learn a song that has meaning for both of you, then surprise your partner by singing it during the ceremony! Or if you’re not so confident in your singing talents, you could ask a close friend or family member to sing it on your behalf.
5. Shot Roulette
If drinking shots has been part of your relationship – maybe you did shots on your first date, or there’s a particular shot that you both enjoy – you could include this in your ceremony. For example, if vodka is your shot of choice - have an honoured guest bring up two shots, one that is water and one that is vodka and give one to each of you. We then have a count down and you take the shots together – The big reveal when you both drink will be hilarious for your guests and make for some great photos!
6. Surprise Ring Bearer
Have the celebrant stick the ring under one guests’ chair, and when it comes to asking for the rings, we can do the whole awkward “I thought you had them, no I thought you had them” Then we’ll explain that everyone in that room is special to you, so could be the ringbearer and that you’d trust any of them, so couldn’t choose, so we left it to chance. We’ll ask them all to check under their chairs and wait for the surprise and delight when the ringbearer is revealed!
7. Include Your Pets
If you’re animal lovers, you could include your furry friend as the ring bearer, as part of your entrance or we can find another fun custom pet-friendly role for them. Fear not – I have lots of tips and tricks to make this go smoother than you may initially envisage! If your pet can’t be there on the day, we can include them in a symbolic way like using a photo of them, or some of their toys and accessories within the ceremony. If they’re important to you, then we can find a way to include them.
8. Group Sing-Along
I personally love this one!! At an appropriate time during the ceremony, you could opt to involve all of your guests with a group sing-along of a favourite, upbeat song. Make sure to have the lyrics available so everyone can join in and perhaps some live musicians to play it for an extra special touch. This works particularly well as an entrance or exit if you’re having an outdoor wedding where sound systems are not an option!
9. Custom Toasts
This is another one modern couples and their guests are loving at the moment. Provide guests with a signature cocktail or glass of fizz, and raise a glass mid-ceremony! You could raise a toast to something silly like one of you agreeing to take the bins out forever more, or one of you giving the other veto on some boxset choices! Or of course, you can toast to the meaningful promises too! It’s a great way to loosen up the atmosphere and encourages everyone to join in. It also avoids that awkward shuffle out of the room after the ceremony with a long line at the bar.
10. Ceremony in the Round
Instead of having a traditional layout with everyone in rows facing forwards, you could rethink this arrangement and have your ceremony seating in a circle, to create an intimate, inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels connected and part of the moment. You could go even further with the playful option of having the seats in a spiral effect!
11. Bespoke Unity Painting
Commission a local painter to create an image that you both like and ask them to split it into sections. You can then paint a tiny section each and collaborate on one small section together during the ceremony to represent your union. This could then be placed in a communal area for your guests to join in and finish the masterpiece during the rest of the day.Credit: Tom Heath Photography
12. Confetti Cannons at ‘I Do’
Imagine if at the point you say “I do”, confetti cannons or colourful smoke bombs go off! It’s dramatic and would create a visual climactic moment. It makes for a very theatrical and unexpected element for your guests and ensures showstopping photos!
13. Your Love Story Playlist
Share your love story through music. Play snippets of songs that mark key moments in your relationship, whether it’s your first dance song, a holiday anthem, or simply one that reminds you of your spouse, it’s a unique way to personalise the ceremony. For me, I would have a whole host of Muscials and Disney songs as that is what my husband and I love – what would you choose?
14. Non-Traditional Processional
Ooh this is a good one – how about you ditch the whole one waiting and one walking down the aisle and make an entrance together —or enter through the guests for a surprise start!
15. Pass the Microphone
Now hear me out, this has to be planned very well to not become a town hall meeting or an open-mic night, but with my help that’s totally doable. You can either pre-select or allow a certain number of guests to share short, spontaneous well-wishes during the ceremony.
16. Surprise Dance-Off Exit
After you’re pronounced as married, instead of walking back down the aisle, break into a surprise dance-off with your wedding party! It could be a choreographed routine or just a spontaneous, upbeat exit that gets everyone clapping and cheering as you dance your way into married life. Perfect for couples who love to dance and want a high-energy finale!
17. Incorporate a Game
Host a fun mini-game like the “shoe game” or a couple’s quiz during the ceremony to involve guests and share some laughs. Audience participation like this, when done right, can be fun and really give you the sense of togetherness that a gathering like this should fulfil you with.
18. Cultural Fusion Ritual
If you have mixed heritage between you both, it could be fun and meaningful to blend elements from each of your backgrounds or cultures into a unique, meaningful ritual. For example, you could do a “unity food tasting,” where you both share bites of traditional foods from each culture. This moment could include family members too alongside fun explanations of why each food is significant to your heritage, making it meaningful and tasty for you and interesting and educational for your guests.
19. A Shared Hobby or Passion
If you both love something unusual (like board games or hiking), we can find a way to incorporate it into the ceremony and celebrate your shared interest. Let’s take a sport for example like Badminton – we could always do a serve from one to the other to deliver vows or a message from one to the other that once caught, can be unravelled and read out! Plenty more ideas where that came from!
20. Lighting a Lantern
A lovely element you could include is to light and release a lantern together for a symbolic and visually stunning moment during the ceremony. It’s perfect for outdoor ceremonies and can be adapted for indoor settings with LED options and other ideas we can discuss that create a similar feeling inside.
21. Rock, Paper, Scissors for the First Vow
Start your vows with a bit of playful competition! You and your partner can play a quick round of Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine who gets to say their vows first. This fun, light-hearted moment will get everyone smiling and set the tone for a joyful ceremony.
22. A Lyrical Reading
Instead of including a traditional poem or reading in your ceremony, why not select a song that holds special meaning for you as a couple or where the lyrics express what you want to say to the other. You can read them aloud, get someone else to, or even have a loved one perform them as a surprise.
23. Love Lock Ceremony
Instead of a traditional unity ritual, you could each bring a padlock engraved with your initials or a meaningful date. During the ceremony, you lock them together onto a frame, a keepsake box, or even a custom-made stand or ornament, symbolising the strength of your commitment. Then, toss the keys into a decorative jar or a box to “lock” your love forever! It’s a beautiful, modern twist with a lasting memento for your home.
24. A ‘How We Met’ Dramatisation
As part of the ceremony where we share your love story, we could recreate the story of how you met with the help of friends acting out your roles, with friends playing the parts! This could either be cute or hilarious – depending on the story and your friends!
